Everyone deserves to feel connected, valued and included. Yet many people with disability face barriers that limit their participation in everyday life. These barriers can lead to isolation, loneliness and poor mental health. That’s why community inclusion and advocacy are essential — they ensure people with disability have equal opportunities to thrive.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), more than a quarter of people with disability do not leave home as often as they would like, due to challenges with access, transport or discrimination. Sunnyfield is committed to changing this through practical, respectful and personalised disability support.
Benefits for People with Disability.
Improved health and wellbeing.
Being active in the community supports both mental and physical health. It builds a sense of belonging, reduces isolation, and challenges negative stereotypes.
Skill building.
Everyday experiences such as catching public transport or shopping help people build confidence and independence.
Social connection.
Access to community activities creates opportunities to form friendships, join groups with shared interests and build positive relationships.
Empowerment.
Inclusion gives people the chance to make decisions, shape their own path and grow through new opportunities.
Benefits for the Community.
Less discrimination.
When communities embrace inclusion, they break down barriers and create a culture of fairness and respect.
A stronger workforce.
Inclusive communities encourage people with disability to enter and contribute to the workplace. This not only widens the talent pool but also enriches workplaces with diverse skills and perspectives.
How Sunnyfield Supports Community Inclusion.
At Sunnyfield, our Community Access Programs run across Sydney and regional NSW. These programs help people with disability explore their local community, gain new experiences and feel safe doing so, with a Sunnyfield support worker by their side.
Activities include:
- Weekend social groups
- Attending medical appointments
- Visiting movies, museums and galleries
- Playing or watching sport
- Enjoying coffee at a café
- Spending time at parks, beaches or gardens
- Travel training
Our goal is to empower every client with choice — deciding how many hours, what activities and when they want support.
