Learning ‘Skills for Life’ With Macquarie Community College

Sunnyfield clients have been given the opportunity to learn skills for life with funding for accredited courses received from a grant from the Mary Mackillop Foundation.

In November, 24 Sunnyfield clients enrolled into Cooking and Money Management classes at the Macquarie Community College. The Cooking class is held one night a week when clients learn the basic and essential skills of cooking and how to follow recipes. These courses have not only produced a sense of achievement but also delicious scones, muffins and cheese cakes!

The Money Management class has been hugely popular with 2 groups attending Tuesday and Wednesday classes. Building on basic numeracy skills, the clients are learning to count and recognise money and its value, preparing amounts for independent
purchases of shopping items and identifying item prices by looking at
supermarket brochures. At the end of the term, the class will go out and purchase a meal with their teacher to practice their newly developed skills. This course is building the confidence of clients and encouraging their independence and involvement in
managing their own spending money.

The Sunnyfield Client Services Improvement team have been building
a strong relationship with Macquarie Community College to ensure clients continue to enjoy building skills for life through a wider range of courses.
