Wild About Learning: Reptile Park Work Experience

October 28, 2025

Participants from Sunnyfield’s Northern Beaches Vocational Services recently completed a five-week hands-on experience at the Australian Reptile Park, where they explored the fascinating world of animal care, teamwork, and conservation.

Over the five weeks, participants gained practical skills caring for a variety of animals, from mammals and large birds to spiders and reptiles. They took part in feeding, cleaning, and enrichment activities, learning directly from the Reptile Park’s expert keepers.

Some of the standout moments included observing venom extraction from snakes and spiders, preparing animal food, and even helping to walk the Komodo dragon — a moment many described as unforgettable.

“The highlight was that we got to touch the Komodo Dragon and got a picture taken with the alligator,” shared Emma.

“The best experience was holding the python and feeding the birds (lorikeets),” said Jayden.

And Connor summed it up perfectly: “It was a venomous experience!”

Through experiences like this, Sunnyfield continues to create meaningful opportunities for people with disability to explore their passions, build skills, and take steps toward achieving their career goals and ambitions.
