For Peter, moving out of home has been a massive journey – one that has seen his confidence grow, new possibilities open up and a new sense of independence take shape.
After previously living at home with his family, Peter made the move into his own home with support from Sunnyfield. It was a big change, but one that has given Peter the opportunity to build his independence, develop new skills and discover what he is capable of.
Peter’s support worker, Jesse, has been alongside him throughout the journey.
“I’ve been with Peter essentially every day and I’ve seen his personality grow from very shy, very quiet to the big personality that he is now,” Jesse says.
When Jesse first began supporting Peter, he required a high level of physical support with everyday activities. Peter wasn’t able to walk, sit or stand independently, or eat independently. “Now he’s able to do all of those things and more,” Jesse says.
That progress has opened the door to new experiences – including one particularly memorable day at Manly Beach.
While driving past the beach, Peter looked out at the sand and said, “I wish I could just walk on the sand.”
For Peter, this was more than simply wanting to take a stroll along the beach. After working hard to build his physical independence, being able to walk on the sand represented something he had once been unable to do. Jesse didn’t hesitate. “I was like, yeah, sweet, let’s do it.”
Together, they walked onto the sand.
They both became emotional after the experience – a moment Jesse remembers as one of his favourite memories.
Today, Peter is continuing to build on that achievement. His next goal is even bigger: walking up to Barrenjoey Lighthouse. It’s a goal that Jesse is helping Peter work towards through regular support and training, building his strength, confidence and endurance along the way.
For Peter, independence is also growing through daily moments at home. He helps with cooking and preparing meals, takes part in daily activities and enjoys having his own space. “I really like my room,” Peter says. “I love it.”
Moving out of home for the first time has given Peter more than a new place to live. It has created opportunities to develop his independence, pursue personal goals and experience moments that once may not have seemed possible.
And with Barrenjoey Lighthouse now in his sights, Peter is already looking ahead to what he can achieve next.
“I’ve never moved out of home before, but now I’m just living the dream and loving the life.”
